Making Rock Candy with Steven Universe

It’s week 2 of Camp Warner Bros. and that means it is time to save the Earth and bring peace to the galaxy with Steven Universe!  This week, we are going to have some fun with science, color mixing, learning patience and making a delicious treat for our Steven Universe: The Movie camp viewing party! We’re making Rock Candy (aka crystal gem) with Steven Universe!

Steven Universe’s “Crystal Gem” Candy Recipe

Disclaimer:  Making rock candy with Steven Universe camp activity requires adult supervision at all times. Please use caution when pouring hot liquid.

1 glass jar -I recommend a tall mason jar or vase

1 pencil or a wooden dowel

1 CLEAN paper clip – I recommend the large size

String made of cotton or kitchen twine

Food coloring of your choice

3 cups of granulated sugar

1 cup of water

Tie one end of the string to the pencil or wooden dowel and the other end to the paper clip.

Set to the side.

Pour the water into a saucepan on medium heat.  Add in one cup of sugar at a time.  Stir until dissolved.  DO this until all cups of sugar have been added and have dissolved.

Set the mixture to the side for about ten minutes so it can cool.

Pour the mixture into the glass jar.  You can use a funnel to pour the mixture slowly in.

Set to the side in a cool and dark place to allow the rock candy to form.  I recommend leaving it alone for about three days.  You will want to keep an eye on it so that crystals are not forming along the inside of the glass jar walls.  Once you can see there a significant amount of crystals have formed long the string and paper clip, you can remove it slowly.

The Science Behind The Fun

As time passes (and the solution cools), the water will slowly evaporate from the solution. As the water evaporates, the solution will become more saturated with sugar. The sugar molecules will collect on the string, and the candy crystals will grow molecule by molecule!

Extra Science Fun

Try making two jars of candy. In the first jar – seed your “Crystal Gem” Candy by rolling your string in water and sugar. In the second jar do not seed your string with sugar before growing. Determine if using seed sugar crystals changes the growth rate of your “Crystal Gem” Candy!rock-candy
