Active Families Getting Healthy in the New Year


Is your family into fitness or did you make some resolutions this year to get fit?  There are many resources and opportunities available for families that want to take the plunge into the world of fitness and my family is no exception.  We have certainly enjoyed the holidays a little too much around here and now it is time to hunker down!

Here is one great way to get active and fit while getting your family out of the house!

The Atlanta Track Club recently sponsored a One Mile Fun Run (7 years of age and older including adults) and Kilometer Kids Dash (6 years of age and under) on March 8 at 10am at the Georgia State Capitol  as a part of Georgia’s “Be Healthy Georgia” day.  In case you missed this opportunity with your family, there are still many opportunities available to you.

Kilometer Kids  FREE online program sponsored by the Atlanta Track Club will get your whole family involved in the fitness plan.  The goal of Kilometers Kids is to encourage kids/families to run/walk the equivalent of a marathon (26.2 miles) in an eleven week period.  Families keep track their miles online and incentive prizes are awarded along the way.  Families are encouraged to login in twice a week with at least 1.25 miles each time.  The spring session begins February 24 and registration is FREE!

There are also fun races associated with this program so please be sure to check out the Atlanta Track Club’s website for more information regarding these additional fun runs.


Of course there are other ways that your family or even you can become active this Spring.  Here are a few that you might find helpful:

Couch to 5K Programs:  There are several of these programs available for you to use.  Check your app store to find one that works for you.  Some of these programs are free.

Moms Run This Town (MRTT):  This online support group was actually started by a mom in Newnan, Georgia.  With local chapters across the country, I am sure you can find one that interests you.  This group strives to be a support group for moms that like to run and/or walk.

Girls on the Run:  Their mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident while integrating running as a part of the program.

Let’s Move  Federal governments’ online program

Whether you have been on the fitness train for quite some time or just beginning as my family, becoming an active, healthy family is priceless.  Happy Trails!

    This is really nice. A woman got pulled into the bushes and raped on a busy street during morning commute. They never caught him, either. I'm scared to run, I was just thinking this morning how much I wish there was a safe place to go. Lucky you.
