One of my favorite pastimes as a child was to read R. L. Stine‘s Goosebumps series. I just could not get enough of those books. I certainly spent many nights under the covers equipped with a flashlight just so I could finish a book. Did I get scared? Heck yeah, I did and it was totally worth it! When the made for television movies came out, I felt like I had just won the R. L. Stine lottery! Then the movies on the big screen! I was seriously over the top excited that my childhood favorite was ready to be shared with not just fellow Goosebumps fans across the world, but also a brand new generation could fall in love with this series.
And what could make this even sweeter? Not just a 2nd movie to hit the big screens this past year, but also that a whole new generation of kids is being introduced to this beloved series. As a teacher, I can’t help but rejoice anytime something happens that makes my kids and students want to read more!
Now that I am older and have children of my own, I love that I get to celebrate the scare I felt with my little ones. I have already passed on my collection of books for Joseph to enjoy, and now the two of us get to participate in the Goosebumps 2 Gummie Family Challenge. From fun and tasty recipes to a science experiment with Slappy, we are thrilled to celebrate the arrival of Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween on digital December 25 and Blu-Ray/DVD on January 15.
Be careful what you wish for. With their after school junk business, best friends Sonny and Sam hope to find treasure in other people’s trash. But when cleaning out the old Stine house, they open a locked book that frees a supernatural nightmare- Slappy! Now, with the help of Sonny’s sister Sarah, they’re in a race against time to get the sinister dummy and all the creatures he’s brought to life back into the pages before he unleashes total pandemonium!
Slappy’s Holiday Thumbprint Cookies
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
2 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp. salt
36 Haribo gummy bears (pick red and green to be festive)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, mix butter and brown sugar together. Add egg yolks, one at a time, and then stir in the vanilla extract.
Fold in flour and salt, stirring until completely combined.
Cover bowl with plastic wrap and set in the freezer for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes in the freezer, shape dough into tablespoon-sized balls.
Decorate cookie balls with desired holiday sprinkles.
Arrange 1–1/2 inches apart on the cookie sheet.
Using your thumb, press a hole in the middle of each ball. Make sure to make the hole deep and wide enough so the gummy bears don’t spill out, but not too deep or you will crack the sides of the cookie during baking.
Bake cookies for 8–10 minutes, or until the cookies look almost done. Take out the cookie sheet from the oven and place a single gummy bear in each cookie cavity.
Return cookie sheet back to oven and bake until the gummy bears completely melt (should take about 2 minutes).
Let cookies cool and enjoy before Slappy gets to them first!
We also made Holiday Gummy Bear Bark and Gummy Bear Holiday “Mocktails.” Click here to get those recipe cards and more. Not only did we make some delicious snacks to enjoy for our viewing party later tonight, but also we conducted a fun Science experiment with Haribo Gummy Bears! Ever wonder what would happen to a gummy bear if you put one in various solutions? Watch our video below to find out about this and more fun you can have hosting your very own Goosebumps 2 viewing party!
