I am captivated by the ocean and all those beautiful creatures that call that place home. I wish that I could take some underwater trips just to see them in action. Of course, that would be difficult to do considering I am scared to death of the ocean! Quite the quandary, huh? I really LOVE going to the beach and dipping my toes into the sand. I also enjoy taking excursions out to the deep blue ocean waters. Jumping in is quite a different story!
That is where my next love comes in, aquariums! I am so thankful that there are an abundance of great aquariums out there that allow visitors the opportunity to see up front and personal the majestic animals of the ocean. Thankfully, I live near one of the world’s largest and most captivating aquariums, the Georgia Aquarium! Featuring one of the largest single aquatic habitats and one of the most abundant collections of aquatic life in the world, the Georgia Aquarium is dedicated to global leadership in research and conservation of aquatic animals around the world. With seven distinct galleries and more than 100 exhibits, the Georgia Aquarium represents aquatic environments ranging from arctic to tropical waters and features one of the most diverse assortments of aquatic animals anywhere.
Now the Georgia Aquarium is celebrating 10 years, and as a result of that anniversary, visitors are in for some special treats with updated and added attractions. My family and I were excited to join others in previewing the aquarium’s newest exhibits that opened March 31.
SunTrust Pier 225
One of my favorite new attractions at the Georgia Aquarium has to be the California sea lions! At Pier 225, visitors will be transported to the coast of California for an up close and entertaining intimate look at the captivating California sea lions. Listed on the U.S. Endangered Species Act as “threatened” and under the Marine Mammal Protection Act as “depleted,” the Georgia Aquarium rescued two stranded pups from the sad phenomenon that was taking place on the beaches of California. Back in March of 2015, there was an “unusually high number of sea lions pups were stranded on California beaches during an Unusual Mortality Event (UME).” The Georgia Aquarium welcomed two of those pups, Jupiter and Neptune.
The 4D Funbelievable Theater
I just can’t say enough great things about how the 4D theater has been transformed. With 240 interactive seats and a state of the art sound system, guests are in for a special treat when they sit down to take in Happy Feet! I do not want to give it all away so let me just say you will experience a weather trend that we don’t get to see that much on the Southside of Atlanta! Follow Mumble as he goes to search for the reason behind the fish famine. You will leave with your toes a tapping!
AT&T Dolphin Celebration
The Georgia Aquarium has also created an all new dolphin show. Guests will be treated to an in-depth look into the behaviors of the bottlenose dolphin and the relationship they have with their trainers. This new presentation is both entertaining and educational. Plus, they now have a new SOAK ZONE! I know in the past when people say SAOK ZONE, people typically get sprinkled with water if they are lucky! That is not the case here! When they say SOAKED, you better be prepared! Of course, not everyone in the SOAK ZONE gets soaked, but there many that do!
Celebrate with the Georgia Aquarium their 10th anniversary. For 10 years they have inspired and educated over 23,000,000 guests. I know my family is looking forward to the next ten years!
