Groundhog Day

Originating in Germany, Groundhog Day is celebrated in the United States every February 2.  Old European tradition states that if a hibernating animal sees its shadow on February 2, there will be six more weeks of winter.  Now I do not know about you, but this Georgia Peach looks forward to Springtime in Georgia, pollen and all!

Groundhog Day is currently celebrated in the United States in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.  Punxsutawney Phil is the groundhog that resides there and predicts the weather.  If Phil can see his shadow when he comes out of his home, winter will be with us for six more weeks.  If Phil hangs out and has no shadow, then Spring is coming early.

There are lots of ways to celebrate groundhog Day with children.  From the many arts and crafts you can make to the science lessons on groundhogs or shadows, there are many fun activities to engage in.

Groundhog’s Day Off

Of course, children are not the only ones that can enjoy Groundhog Day.  Bill Murray stars in the classic Groundhog Day movie.  Released in 1993,  “a weather man is reluctantly sent to cover a story about a weather forecasting “rat” (as he calls it). This is his fourth year on the story, and he makes no effort to hide his frustration. On awaking the ‘following’ day he discovers that it’s Groundhog Day again, and again, and again. First he uses this to his advantage, then comes the realization that he is doomed to spend the rest of eternity in the same place, seeing the same people do the same thing EVERY day.”
