I remember vividly seeing the previews for this movie on television, and I recall how “captivated” I was. I do not recall hearing the story of Ashley Smith in the news even though I am from Georgia. I do not recall reading the headlines of an escape and manhunt of Brian Nichols. Truth is I seldom watch the news for the simple fact that it is too depressing. But there was something about the previews that really had me, and I think the reason was is that I needed a reminder of my own purpose in life. To remember where I need to go when I am at my weakest, but more importantingly, grace.
After watching this film, I was and am still amazed at the strength and courage she had during this ordeal and with her own haunting demons. What a testimony! All of us face our own struggles in life and it is who we turn to that matters. It is where our strength comes from. This true story, very real in film adaptation, takes you through the intertwining of two individuals at their own crossroads in life. God had a purpose for the two of them, and they lead them to one another. But this story is more than just Ashley Smith. Brian Nichols has his own story to tell. I was thrilled to discover that through this film he would also find redemption.
