Get Outdoors Georgia Day June 14, 2014

I fondly remember the days of long ago when I would stay outside until dusk or until it began to storm.  I only came home for supper or to get ready for bed. I even remember the times when my parents had to come get me because I was having so much fun outside that I lost track of time. Due to many reasons today,  kids have not experienced what I described as the good old days.  As a mother I realize that this is true for good reason.  I never would allow my children to do what I once did for fear of losing them or worse.  The world is just not what it once was.  Maybe I am over protective!  Whatever it may be, I realize the grip that technology has on my family (myself included) and there comes a time when we need to disconnect so we can reconnect.

When my family takes trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Georgia, I am in awe of the beauty that surrounds me.  Sitting out on the porch just taking in the scenery renews my mind.  There is something about the great outdoors that attracts people.  Many people know that if they want to reconnect to themselves, they just need to get outdoors without any of the distractions of technology.  Our kids need to spend lots of time outdoors in the natural world.  They need to connect with nature by climbing trees, wading in streams, lying in tall grass, inventing games, or just digging in the sand or mud!

Does being in the great outdoors sound interesting to you?  Can you relate to my experiences?  if so, check out my blog post featured on Atlanta Area Moms Blog for more information on this year’s Get Outdoors Georgia event on June 14.

“I think that I cannot preserve my health and spirits, unless I spend four hours a day at least – and it is commonly more than that – sauntering through the woods and over the hills and fields, absolutely free from all worldly engagements.” -
Henry David Thoreau
