Celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

Why do we celebrate this holiday in America each year?   Cinco de Mayo is a Spanish word that means the ‘fifth of May’ and it is celebrated by Mexican-American communities throughout Mexico and the US.  Contrary to popular belief, this day is not set aside to celebrate Mexico’s independence, but rather, it is a day set aside to remember Mexico’s David and Goliath-like fight with France.  Originally, Cinco de Mayo honored the conquest of the Mexicans in the war of Puebla in 1862.  In 1862, as the French invasion of Mexico began, Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza’s force of 4,000 soldiers defeated twice as many French soldiers in the Battle of Puebla.  Even though the French occupation of Mexico remained until 1867, Mexican Americans were inspired by  the Mexican soldiers’ courage and determination and set aside time to remember their David and Goliath type fight.
