Must-Have Marvin, written by Christy Ziglar, is a delightful picture book in the Shine Bright Kids series. Shine Bright Kids is a book series that teaches children the importance of making good decisions.
Must-Have Marvin is a wonderfully illustrated 32 page hard back book that is recommended for children ages 4-8 years old, although it really speak to all ages! In this story Marvin is consumed with wanting new things. Every time he sees a new thing, Marvin insists he just has to have it! After spending all his money on a toy robot and neglecting some friends and neighbor, Marvin begins to realize, with a little help from a very sweet elderly neighbor, that the “stuff” is not what brings him joy, his family and friends do!
As a teacher and mother, I am always on the lookout for picture books that are quick to read aloud and discuss. I love finding treasures such as the Shine Bright Kids series because they provide me with a unique way to help teach character traits. Providing students and children with meaningful interactions about making good decisions is important to me both in the classroom and out. Must-Have Marvin was a perfect fit. Helping kids to see that life is more than the “stuff” is not always easy; however, Must-Have Marvin provided a meaningful look at why people are more important in our lives. Nearly everyone can relate to this story!
Another unique feature of this series is Ziggy Star. Throughout the book there is a little star named Ziggy that children search for on each page. The star interacts with the text as Marvin makes good and bad decisions. This a great tool for parents and teachers to use to discuss.
“Christy Ziglar, financial planner, mother of twins and niece of legendary motivator and the world’s original optimist, Zig Ziglar, is bringing the same timeless wisdom and ageless advice to an entirely new, younger audience through her new Shine Bright Kids picture book series.”
“Thanks to her first-grade teacher, who recognized her superior skills in drawing a robin, Luanne Marten has been drawing, painting, and sketching ever since. She is a great experimenter and has a fresh, whimsical approach that brings her characters to life.”
