My Review

As a fan of Gary Chapman and The Five Love Languages, Chapman brings a freshness to marriages with his book The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted.  Many Christian marriages strive to put God first but seldom know just how to do that.  They find themselves asking a question that many do.  What does it look like to put God first in my marriage?  Chapman helps married couple to realize that this union between husband and wife is far more than just a union between a male and female in matrimony seeking to get one’s needs met, but rather it is about unity with the Holy Father and each other.  This unity “frees you to express your own diversity, yet experience complete oneness with your mate.  You are free to be all that God intends you to be, while experiencing all that God intended when He united us in marriage.”   I do not know about you, but this what I desire to have in my marriage.

Chapman outlines in his book how to strive towards this “unity” by looking at the heart of why we do what we do even though we do not want to do what we should not do.  Sounds familiar?  Romans 7:15 For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate (New American Standard).   In order to obtain a marriage that we’ve always wanted, we must first take a look into our own beings and begin there.  It is so easy to look at our mates and know every little thing that they must change in order for things to be right in our marriages.  The problem is that is not where we start.  We have to take a look at ourselves and examine what imperfections we bring to the marriage and begin to make changes internally.  It is through this changing that we begin to bring our best to our marriage.  It is not an easy task especially if you are facing an uphill battle with spouse that is reluctant to change or even do his/her part.  The good news is that should not stop you!  You can still work towards the Godly marriage you want by living as Christ would have to right where you are.  As we do this Christ begins to show up more and more, thus leading to a marriage that is even more fulfilling as God begins to take His rightful place as the head of your marriage.

Some of you may be saying, “Yeah, it sounds so simple but you aren’t living the life I am living!”  You’re right, I am not.  I am living out the life that Christ has planned for me and my story has its own share of demons.  Needless to say, Gary Chapman’s book helps you to see why it is important that we work on our imperfections first through Christ so that we can bring to our marriage what God has intended for us to bring.    Gary Chapman’s book is more than just a book about self-examination, but also it explores how you can work on other aspects of your marriage such as love, money, sex, and even parents by putting Christ first.  If you are looking for a way to restore your marriage and bring closeness back, I highly recommend this book.  Gary Chapman once again delivers hope to marriages!
